Claim requests
Arda Marred does not require an application, but rather a character claim that still needs to be approved by the mods. This is a bit like the little sibling of an application: It is shorter and more aimed towards making it easier for other players to get the gist of your character. The audience of your info post is primarily other players. We do reserve the right to decline claims or request revisions before the claim is approved. To place a claim, the following is needed:
✦ The character may be neither held for someone else nor already claimed.
✦ They must have an info post on their journal that uses the info post form and seems acceptable to the mods.
✦ Be one of the allowed character types as listed on the FAQs.
Format
✦ In the subject line, please write: Character Type | Character Name | Canon | Held/Not Held
✦ Please use one comment for each character.
✦ If this is a re-claim of a dropped or idled character, please also write "re-claim" in the subject line.
✦ If you run out of subject line space, just continue the rest of the info underneath the in reply.
✦ To request a character with an animal companion co-claim please add a note in your reply, and whether or not that companion is essential or non-essential.
Please note the following:
While you are allowed to place a claim at any time, claims are only processed from the 8th to the 15th of any given month. Please try not to post on the very last day, because claims can take several days to process.
We have a hard max of three AUs of the same character. That means that there should be one canon spot always available, and three AU spots. These AUs must also be different from each other. We will be using time stamps to determine processing order during claims.
Due to the nature of highly varied character types, some claims may take longer than others because more than one mod has to look at them for whatever reason. If you are "skipped" please understand that you are not forgotten, we simply need to take more time with your claim.
Due to the nature of allowing so many different character types and duplicates, many times "judgement calls" have to be made in terms of what characters are allowed, not allowed, or need to be AU. Some situations are going to be tricky! Power adjustment, questions, and revision requests won't be uncommon. But never fear! We're here to help you get in, rather than keep you out.

Questions!
1 - Soul eating of NPCs: You have free reign on Ghuls, Goblins, Graugs, Orcs, Uruks, Trolls and Wraits. If he attempts to eat a Houseless Spirit there will be horribly ill effects.
2 - I agree that the Lords themselves could not be summoned. I'm okay with minor elemental control and animal suggestion ("normal" animals only), provided you put a note in your Power Opt-in post for animal suggestion for those characters that have pets who that might fall under.
I'd like to know how minor an area of effect you think is reasonable for the minor elemental control?
3 - Massive slaughtering of armies - yep, that'd be overpowered. If there's a large plot going on, I'd say he could take out approximately 20-30 NPCs depending upon difficulty, but use it sparingly.
4 - I'm wondering about the nature of Stormbringer and how you intend to play with him. Do you intend to have him act on his own without Elric at any point in time?
5 - Would you be okay if Nogrod was his starting location? That would be my initial thought, considering the nature of the sword and Elric himself considering himself evil.
Re: Questions!
1. Sounds good to me.
2. Also sounds good- it should be noted that it takes Elric time to do anything of this sort. It's not an instantaneous ability. He'd have to spend a lengthy period in meditation focusing upon his intentions, at least initially. Once he forms an astral plane agreement with something he's able to evoke his abilities faster. As area of effect for elemental control goes, I think that this should be based in part on how long he spent working towards it. An hour's worth of meditation should produce a much smaller effect than a day's worth, or more. 12 hours spent in meditation might allow him to contact storm elementals to manifest a rainstorm over a village, as an example. For future replications of this feat, the contact time could easily drop to a few hours. I don't see where it would ever be instant in Middle-Earth, as he'd be adapting his abilities to an alien world. Since it takes both planning and a time investment for these abilities, they would rarely be used. He could not use them very well at all without the Actorios Ring- this relic greatly improves his magical abilities (mainly by causing elemental-type spirits to recognize his authority.)
3. Understood, sounds fine by me.
4. Stormbringer will only act without Elric present under very special circumstances- this is typically if it is separated from Elric for any reason. Its main desire will be to return to its 'master', which it can manage via floating back to him. The only other situation I can envision in which Stormbringer would strike out on its own would be if it encountered another 'Black Sword' similar to itself. It sees these as rivals. In Tolkien's canon, the sword Anglachel would prompt this instinct.
5. I'm quite alright with Nogrod as their starting location. Although Elric is actually more 'good' than evil in his intentions, this is fitting with his canon. Stormbringer is evil enough to land them both in Nogrod.
Re: Questions!
2 - Can you explain a little more about an "astral plane agreement?" it might be something we would say messes with the music which has it's own mechanics.
4 - In that case, I'd like to treat Stormbringer similarly to an essential animal companion. This wouldn't affect your character total, since he's basically essential, but I would like a separate add-on to the bottom of your info post based off the animal companion co-claim format at the bottom of this page. I think that will help both us and other players know where Elric ends and Stormbringer begins. How does that sound?
Re: Questions!
Re. "Astral plane agreements": Most of Elric's sorcery is based around 'pacts' with various types of spirit-beings. In this own world, he has pacts with elemental-type beings, 'Beast Lords', and the Lords of Chaos. Most of these pacts are based on his heritage- as the Emperor of Melniboné they are a hereditary right. His Actorios ring is, in part, proof of his identity. But other pacts, like his pact with Lord Arioch of Chaos, involve a specific, agreed-upon exchange. (Which is why Elric's most frequent warcry is "Blood and souls for my Lord Arioch!") When he performs sorcery, he typically puts himself in a meditative state which allows astral projection. In this state, he can seek out whatever being he wants to contact and can attempt to arrange a favor. Perhaps in Arda he could arrange his initial 'pact' with the music? Which in turn could make use of him, when it wants to. Favors go both ways.
Re. Stormbringer: I'm honestly not sure if he should count as an animal companion- this would seem to imply that the sword is under Elric's control. But Stormbringer is a very active and assertive personality- in D&D terms, it would be a chaotic evil sentient weapon with an ego well above 20 (considers itself superior to its owner, often exerts its own choices). I can make this edit if the mods still agree it would count as a companion, but I am fine with it counting against my character total given the strength of its personality. If you do still agree that the sword is a companion, do I just tack on the companion co-claim or should I restructure the info post entirely?
Re: Questions!
Re: Stormbringer. Actually, I was thinking since he is not totally under Elric's control that it would be a good idea to highlight that. Right now it kind of blends in with other text and looks that way at first glance. (Let's be honest, most people don't actually read carefully when looking at these things, and the info post is in part meant for other players to read.)
Perhaps I phrased it badly. He wouldn't "count" as one. He certainly isn't. I just thought that it would be a good idea to use a similar format for the info post, so those glancing over it could see that it's a little more than just an ability of Elric's and has it's own thing. It's an entirely a new situation which we have no set format for.
Perhaps you can highlight him in another way such as putting an italics on the part of the personality section that's his, and then listing stormbringer's individual abilities somewhat separately, like:
Abilities
Elric's abilities by himself, and while wielding stormbringer
Stormbringer's Abilities
Stormbringer's individual abilities, such as eating souls and moving around, etc.
If you don't like that option either, just come up with some bold/italics/underline/color of your choosing to make more visually clear the fact that Stormbringer's personality and abilities are somewhat independent of Elric's. It's just meant for ease of reading, not for any official purposes.
